SuiteApps : How To Get Started With Enhancing NetSuite’s Capability

As we all know Oracle offer an exemplary product in NetSuite. It will meet the core needs of most businesses with purely the native offerings from one of the many SKUs.

There is always, however, going to be something less mainstream a business will need to achieve that the basic offering can’t assist with. SuiteApps are like the extra tools in your toolbox, specially designed to make the NetSuite experience even more powerful.

SuiteApps are not dissimilar to applications you might download to your smartphone. They add extra functionality to your NetSuite system and expand the scope of processes you are able to manage.

NetSuite provide a SuiteApp Marketplace where you can discover a wide range of apps tailored to different business needs, and countless NetSuite partners have developed their own apps that broaden NetSuite’s horizon to encompass even more unique features.

In this article, we’ll take a close look at the world of SuiteApps, exploring their benefits, costs, and everything else you need to know to get started with them.

What are SuiteApps?

SuiteApps are add-on applications or bundles for NetSuite that expand the scope of the system to meet more unique or industry specific needs.

SuiteApps can be developed and published by NetSuite themselves or, as is more often the case, by NetSuite partners and developers.

This variety of creators means that a wide range of industry specific and unique needs can be met through the available applications. This includes features that an organization the size of Oracle would be less inclined to invest time and resource in to.

Examples of some of the SuiteApps available through SuiteApp.com

Confusingly, SuiteApps can be found in one of two places in your NetSuite system.

  • Customization > SuiteBundler > Search & Install Bundles
  • SuiteApp Marketplace

Most free of charge SuiteApps can be found in one of these two places. Others, including those that have an associated cost, may need to be provisioned from the provider before they can be viewed and installed.

SuiteApp Upgrade Types

SuiteApps can be Managed or Unmanaged upgrade types. It is worth paying attention to this when installing new applications as there may be manual actions required by you.

The two upgrade types are as follows –

  • Unmanaged – An Administrator must manually upgrade the application as and when a new version or update is available.
  • Managed – Upgrades are managed by the publisher of the application. No manual actions are required of the end user.

How to View the Installed SuiteApps

If you need to see a list of the SuiteApps and bundles installed in your NetSuite account, you can find lists in the following two places –

  • Customization > SuiteBundler > Search & Install Bundles > List
  • Customization > SuiteCloud Development > Installed SuiteApp List
The Installed SuiteApps List page in NetSuite.

Are SuiteApps Free?

There are a wealth of free to use SuiteApps available. You can find these via the SuiteApp Marketplace, SuiteApp.com or simply by searching Google for recommendations (other search engines are available!).

Some apps will cost you. There is no ball park figure of what this might be so if you are considering an addition to your system you’ll need to reach out to the relevant app provider to find out the cost.

If you are looking at an app produced and distributed by NetSuite, you are best off reaching out to your Account Manager.

There may even be free of charge SuiteApps or apps that are covered by your NetSuite SKU that still need to be provisioned before you are able to view them.

For apps produced by a third party, you should reach out to them directly to discuss the licensing and cost.

If you have used the name to search as opposed to the bundle ID, make sure you check the Company Name before proceeding. The are sometimes multiple bundles with the same or similar name. You need to ensure you are installing the correct one.

Other apps will be found in the SuiteApp marketplace. Click SuiteApps on your NetSuite quick access bar.

Some center types, such as Employee Center, do not have this option available.

Search for the app that you want and then click the tile to view the product page.

Apps that you have access to will have a blue Install button displayed on the right hand side of the page.

If you do not yet have access to the app, the button will not say Install. You may see a button that reads Limited Access or View SuiteApp instead.

The SuiteApp Marketplace

The SuiteApp Marketplace is an area of your NetSuite environment that allows you to search for and install SuiteApps.

For the most part it is a very easy to use and intuitive interface. On the left hand side is a list of categories that will filter the selection of tiles on the right.

Alternatively you can enter a key term in to the search box.

If you have already filtered the results but selecting one of the listed categories, a search term entered will only filter your already narrowed down results. You can remove filters by clicking the Clear All Filters button.

You can sort the SuiteApps on the page by using the Sort By dropdown. Results can be sorted by SuiteApp Name, Publisher, or First Release Date.

If you do not have access to a NetSuite account at present but are interested in the available applications, you can also view these at SuiteApp.com.
